The Parliament of Ghana has announced its intention to hold a Youth Mock Parliament as part of the activities to celebrate 30 years of parliamentary democracy in the country. The mock parliament will feature five tertiary students from the northern zone of Ghana and will take place in Wa on Thursday, 15th June 2023, at the Upper West Regional Library.

Under the auspices of the Speaker of the Eighth Parliament, Right Honorable Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the celebration of the 30th anniversary of parliamentary democracy in Ghana aims to reflect on the journey thus far. The theme for the commemoration is “Thirty years of Parliamentary democracy under the Fourth Republic: The Journey thus far”.

In addition to the Youth Mock Parliament, a public forum and a peace walk will be organized in Tamale and Bolgatanga as part of the lined-up activities for the commemoration. These activities are designed to foster civic engagement and enhance public awareness of parliamentary democracy in Ghana.

According to Mr. Ebenezer Ehumah Djietror, the Coordinator of the 30th Anniversary Celebrations Committee, the activities will be celebrated in four regional zones, starting with the Northern Zone. The anniversary presents an opportunity for Parliament and Ghanaians to reflect on the achievements, acknowledge challenges, and reaffirm their commitment to the principles of democracy, justice, and equality that have guided the nation over the years.

The celebration of Ghana’s 30th anniversary of parliamentary democracy is a significant milestone for the country, highlighting its dedication to democratic governance. As part of the commemorative activities, a television broadcast will showcase the parliamentary journey so far, with a special focus on the pivotal role and significant contributions of women in the history of Parliament.

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Bagbin, calls on all Ghanaians to actively participate in these commemorative activities. It is a time to reflect on the past, forge ahead, and strengthen the resolve to preserve and enhance Ghana’s parliamentary democracy, safeguarding it for generations to come.
