The Wa Naa Security Taskforce has strongly refuted allegations of intimidation and misconduct following an incident in the Fian community on October 15, 2024.
Assembly member Stephen Katoule of the Fian electoral area had accused the taskforce of being involved in illegal activities and acting on behalf of a local resident to intimidate his brother. The taskforce, which was established by the Wa Naa to ensure community safety, has come under scrutiny due to these claims. However, the security group maintains that their actions were in line with their mandate to protect residents and that the accusations stem from misinformation.
In a statement provided by leader of the taskforce, Bush Phone Doctor, the taskforce explained that they were in Fian following a tip-off regarding suspects who had previously stolen valuable items from his shop. The purpose of their visit was to investigate the whereabouts of these suspects.

However, upon arriving in Fian, they were informed of a separate, more urgent matter—a case of severe domestic abuse involving a local miner, referred to as a “gallamsey” operator, who had allegedly broken his wife’s leg during a physical assault.
Bush Phone Doctor explained the situation: “Upon our arrival, we were informed about a woman who had been severely beaten by her husband. Given the severity of the situation, we felt it was our duty to intervene as part of our responsibility to ensure community safety.”

According to the taskforce, during their attempt to address the situation, the alleged abuser fired a pump-action gun into the air, causing chaos. Taskforce members, fearing for their safety, sought cover while waiting for the police, who had already been notified about the domestic violence incident. During the commotion, a taskforce member named Atta tried to maintain control and ensure the safety of his colleagues. Once the police arrived, both the abuser and Atta were taken into custody for questioning.
Despite the taskforce’s account, assembly member Stephen Katoule offered a different perspective in an interview with Info Radio.
He accused the taskforce of engaging in illegal operations and firing their weapons indiscriminately. Katoule claimed that the taskforce had been hired by a local resident to intimidate his brother during a personal dispute. “The youth of our community, alarmed by the gunshots and aggressive behavior, took action against those who claimed to be protecting us,” he said, further alleging that some taskforce members fled when confronted by community members.
The Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Mr. Darko Offei Lomotey, has confirmed that an investigation into the incident is currently underway. “We are in the process of gathering information and will ensure a thorough investigation. Once complete, we will provide a detailed briefing to the public,” DCOP Lomotey said.
The taskforce maintains that they acted in accordance with their mandate and expressed frustration over what they believe to be a misrepresentation of their efforts. They have urged the public to await the results of the police investigation before drawing any conclusions.
