The Wa Central Constituency in the Upper West Region, is the largest in terms of voter population in the region. It has become the epicenter of intense political rivalry between Dr. Rashid Pelpuo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Hajia Humu Awudu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Since the inception of Ghana’s democracy, voter dynamics in this constituency have been influenced by factors such as tribe, religion, and gender.

Dr. Alhaji Hassan Rashid Pelpuo, the current Member of Parliament (MP), took over from Hon. M.A. Seidu in 2004 after Seidu’s two-term tenure in Parliament. Since then, Pelpuo has been a dominant figure, maintaining the seat for the NDC. In his debut election in 2004, Pelpuo triumphed over Mohammed Kpegla of the NPP and has since been unbeatable.

The only time an NPP candidate came close to winning the seat was in 2016, when Pelpuo narrowly defeated the current Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) by just 550 votes. The Wa Central seat remains the most coveted prize for the NPP in the Upper West Region, as they have yet to secure a victory here.

However, Hajia Humu Awudu, a dynamic and energetic woman, is determined to offer a different vision and challenge the incumbent once more.
