The Member of Parliament (MP) for Wa West Constituency, Hon. Peter Lanchene Toobu, has responded to calls by the Majority Leader, Hon. Afenyo Markin, for Parliament to be recalled ahead of the December 7 elections.

Speaking in an interview with Adil Supremo of HOME RADIO 99.7 , Hon. Toobu stated that he cannot abandon his campaign activities unless the recall is for an urgent and critical matter. According to him, the timing is ill-suited as MPs are currently focused on engaging their constituents ahead of the upcoming elections.

“The decision to recall Parliament now, without addressing a pressing and essential matter, is unnecessary. It is not only disruptive to our work in our constituencies but also adds to the hardships of Ghanaians,” Hon. Toobu said.

The Majority Leader, Hon. Afenyo Markin, had on November 22, petitioned the Speaker of Parliament for a recall, sparking debates among MPs and the public. However, Hon. Toobu believes that reconvening Parliament at this time would only serve to distract MPs from their constituency engagements, which are crucial as the general elections approach.

He added that the economic challenges facing the nation should remain the primary concern of Parliament and other stakeholders. “Let us focus on how to reduce the suffering of Ghanaians instead of political manoeuvres,” he remarked.

The Speaker of Parliament has yet to officially respond to the request for a recall. In the meantime, the issue continues to generate discussion, with MPs expressing divergent views on the necessity of reconvening Parliament before the elections.
