With the recent economic situation in the country, MPs from the ruling party calls for the removal of a Minister of finance, Mr. Ken Ofori Atta for the first time in the history of Ghana’s fourth republic.
Yesterday, the 8th of December, a vote of censure took place for the removal of the finance minister failed after the majority members of parliament walked out on the process. Though the minority members of parliament stood on their grounds to cast their votes, they couldn’t secure a 183 votes which amounts to the two thirds of the total number of parliamentarians.
The Upper Communications team led by Mr. Kantagyere write to applaud the bold step taken by the minority members of parliament. Read full press statement below
The communication wing of the NDC in the Upper West Region wishes to congratulate all our gallant 136 MPs in Parliament for their show of love and compassion on the plight of the ordinary Ghanaian. Even though we lost the vote of Censure motion against the Finance Minister, Hon Ken Ofori-Atta, Ghanaians now know beyond reasonable doubt that we (NDC) care about their plight and are always willing to fight for them.
We hereby salute all the 136 MPs on the minority side of Parliament who defied all the odds to push through this historic process to vote for the removal of the Finance Minister. Your sense of empathy is unparalleled, and the good people of this country will appreciate your efforts even though you failed in your efforts to secure the much needed two-thirds majority to see the back of the Finance Minister, you have chalked some major successes in the process.
We thank all the NDC MPs, including the Rt Hon Speaker, for their courage and fidelity to the constitution for meticulously going through due process, including offering the beleaguered Finance Minister and his legal team an opportunity to be heard and be defended. If for nothing at all, under the Rt Hon Speaker, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, our democratic practice has deepened to the extent that an unprecedented censure motion has been fully exhausted.
There can be no equivocation to the fact that, the issues that triggered this historic censure motion are those that resonate with most Ghanaians to the extent that the conduct of the Finance Minister is disgusting, and appalling to say the least.
Ghanaians are deeply traumatised by the fact that the group of 98 NPP Members of Parliament could not demonstrate principles and firmness in their rhetoric of wanting to see the back of the Finance Minister whom they themselves had accused of gross incompetence. Their betrayal of the trust of the ordinary taxpayers whose sweat and toil is being plundered under the direct supervision of this incompetent Minister will continue to haunt them for a long time to come. This is indeed another dark day for justice to the marginalised in Ghana. Sadly, we have no choice but to agree with the speculations in the grapevine that the President is deeply complicit in diverse beneficial ways, in whatever rot that his cousin the Finance Minister is on.
We, as NDC once again, stand vindicated in our criticism of running an evil family and friends government.
We urge the voting population to continue to support the NDC to be their vanguard.
We are by this release, also calling on the President, His Excellency Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo to wake-up and heed the loud cry of ordinary citizens by removing the finance minister from office immediately to safeguard his little integrity, if there is any left.
Last but not least, we urge the Economic and Organised Crime Office, Office of the Special Prosecutor, Transparency International, and all the other anticorruption agencies to take special interest in the activities of this so-called businessman who always intervenes to bribe NPP MPs any time they are about to take very crucial national decisions in Parliament.
This conduct, which appears to be receiving the tacit acquiescence and support from the Presidency, offends the very essence of democratic practice.
We can not run a democracy that way.
An inquiry must be opened to unearth:
1. The clear identity of this intermeddler who is being described as a businessman.
2. What is the business interest of this individual and / or his group with the Government of Nana Addo and Bawumia.
3. Determine if the NPP MPs eventually took the bribes that we are told were first offered.
Ghanaians must rise up and demand answers from the Kyei Mensa Bonsu led majority in parliament for their unprincipled conduct.
Hon Ken Ofori-Atta must not be allowed to continue to mess up the lives and livelihoods of Ghanaians to his personal benefits.
Finally, we also wish to call on other none-state actors such as the TUC, Labour Unions, GNAT, NAGRAT, CCT-GH, UTAG etc to as a matter of urgency, prevail upon government to do the needful to save this country from further destruction.
Long live the NDC!
Long Ghana!!
May God bless our homeland Ghana and make us great and strong!!!
Signed
Issah Kantagyere
