The ‘John and Jane Powerful Women’ group in the Upper West Region has voiced their approval and support for Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s nomination as the running mate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming 2024 elections. This move, they believe, underscores the crucial role women play in governance and national progress.
During a press conference in Wa, the group’s convener, Madam Rehanatu Salifu, praised former President John Dramani Mahama for selecting Prof. Opoku-Agyemang for the second time as his running mate. They emphasized the nomination as a clear signal of inclusivity, diversity, and forward-thinking in Ghana’s political landscape.
Madam Rehanatu lauded Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s exceptional qualities, citing her integrity, leadership, and commitment to public service. She expressed confidence in Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s ability to lead alongside Mr. Mahama and emphasized her potential to drive policy interventions for national development.
Highlighting Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s achievements as Minister of Education, Madam Rehanatu underscored her role in advancing the education sector. She emphasized key initiatives such as the conversion of colleges of education into tertiary institutions, the introduction of free senior high school for vulnerable students, and the establishment of community day senior high schools.
Furthermore, the group called for unity among women across Ghana to rally behind Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s candidacy, viewing it as a historic opportunity to elevate women’s voices and aspirations in politics. They strongly condemned recent attacks on Prof. Opoku-Agyemang by political opponents, urging for a retraction and an apology from those responsible.
