After a resounding victory in the 2024 elections, President John Dramani Mahama officially assumed office on January 7, 2025, and is now faced with the challenging task of appointing ministers for his government. One of the most anticipated appointments is that of the Upper West Regional Minister, a position that carries great responsibility in driving the developmental agenda for the region.
John Mahama, promised during his campaign to run a lean government with not more than only 60 ministers, now has to navigate the delicate process of selecting the best candidates from a pool of capable and distinguished individuals. This task is made even more challenging considering the high number of applicants vying for the position, each with their own strengths and backing from influential figures.
Several competent figures have expressed their interest in the position, and names have been circulating in political circles as potential appointees. Some of the top contenders include:
- Hon. Abu Kabiabata Kansangbata (Abu K. K) – Political aide to Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang. Abu K.K. has strong political ties and a deep understanding of the region’s needs.
- Baba Cuthbert Kuupiel – Former MCE for Nandom Municipality, with significant backing from former Health and Defence Minister and now NDC Council of Elders member Benjamin Kumbuor. Baba Cuthbert has an established track record in local governance and is seen as a strong contender for the role.
- Hon. Samson Abu – Former MP for Lawra Constituency, well-respected for his leadership and contributions to the development of the region. His experience in Parliament makes him a formidable candidate for the role.
- Hon. Kale Caesar – Former Deputy Upper West Regional Minister and former Presidential Staffer. Kale Caesar brings a wealth of experience in both regional and national governance, making him a key player in the selection process.
With such a strong pool of candidates, President Mahama faces a herculean task in selecting the best person to serve as Upper West Regional Minister. The selection must align with his “Resetting Ghana” agenda, focusing on grassroots development, transparency, and the efficient use of resources.
There are power plays underway behind the scenes as various individuals and factions within the party push for their preferred candidates to be nominated. However, Mahama and the Appointment Committee must remain steadfast and ensure that the appointment is made with the best interests of the region and the party at heart.
The key to the success of the NDC in the 2028 elections will depend heavily on the effectiveness of regional ministers and their ability to foster unity and drive development in their respective areas. Any appointment that fails to reflect the ideals of grassroots engagement could undermine the party’s future prospects.
