The Upper West Regional Hospital hosted its 2nd Annual Staff Awards under the theme, “Recognising and Celebrating Our Hardworking Staff.” The colorful ceremony, held at the hospital’s OPD forecourt, honored over 57 outstanding staff members across various categories for their exceptional dedication and contributions to the hospital’s success.
The night’s biggest winner was Mr. Michael Ziem, a Deputy Chief Anaesthetist, who clinched the coveted Overall Most Outstanding Staff Award. He was celebrated with a brand-new Apsonic Aloba motorbike and a citation. The 1st Runner-Up, Mr. Habib Chindo took home a deep freezer and the 2nd Runner-Up Miss Umuheira Salifu received a 43-inch television. The rest of the awardees took citations and certificates.
In his welcome address, the Medical Director of the Upper West Regional Hospital Dr. Robert Amesiya, expressed his profound appreciations for the efforts of all staff, remarking that “Every member of our team deserves an award for their tireless contributions.” He highlighted some key achievements of the hospital in 2024, including: Winning the Ghana Health Service Excellence Award for the second consecutive year. Being named Best Secondary Level Hospital in Ghana, Medical Director recognised as Best Secondary Level Leader and Madam Cynthia Ayine being honored as Most Outstanding Secondary Level Staff.
Dr. Amesiya also noted the significant rise in OPD attendance, a reflection of the hospital’s growing reputation. He urged staff to maintain a high standard of professionalism, adding, “If your absence is not felt, then your presence was not needed.”
The Special Guest of Honor was the Regional Director of Health Services (RDHS) Dr. Damien Pungyire, commended the hospital for spearheading such an inspiring initiative. He described the awards as a testament to the hospital’s commitment to excellence and a morale booster for its staff. Dr. Pungyire added that the hospital has little to do in attaining the status of a teaching hospital, emphasizing that the Regional Health Administration would continue to support its growth.
Dr. Damien Pungyire concluded by commending the proactive leadership of Dr. Amesiya, describing him as a symbol of effective leadership. He noted, “Leadership is a cause; every other thing is an effect.”
Naa Saaka Sunche Naa, representing the Overlord of Wa, commended the hospital for its transformative impact on the region’s healthcare system. He encouraged staff who missed out on awards to work harder and aspire for recognition in future editions.
Hajia Pognaa Fati Issahaka Koray, Chief Director of the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), praised the hospital for its resilience and continued excellence, describing it as a shining beacon in Ghana’s healthcare sector.
The ceremony was chaired by Madam Florence Ansomwime, District Director of Health Services (DDHS) for the Daffiama-Bussie-Issa (DBI) district, who referred to the Upper West Regional Hospital as a pacesetter in healthcare delivery and urged other institutions to emulate its example. The awards night was attended by an array of dignitaries, including prominent chiefs from the Wa Naa Palace, health committee members, partners, and staff of the Regional Health Administration.
