On December 1, 2024, the streets of Wa witnessed a historic gathering as Hassim Alhassan, popularly known as Sisco and the President of Jamaica Youth, led a peace walk under the theme, “Peace Before, During, and After Elections.” The event aimed to foster unity, promote nonviolence, and encourage peaceful coexistence across political affiliations in the Upper West Region.

The peace walk attracted a massive crowd, with participants from different political and social backgrounds joining hands to march through Wa’s principal streets. Youth groups representing diverse political parties came together, emphasizing the shared commitment to a violence-free electoral process.

Amid a lively atmosphere filled with songs, chants, and dances, participants carried placards bearing messages of peace, urging the community to uphold harmony during the upcoming elections.

Addressing the participants, Sisco, the youth leader and advocate for peace, urged the youth to act as guardians of stability in their communities.

“We must do everything possible to maintain peace before, during, and after the elections. Violence will only set us back, and it is our duty as the youth to protect the peace and stability of our community,” Sisco emphasized.

His message resonated deeply, as he highlighted the destructive consequences of violence and the need for collective responsibility in preserving harmony.

Representatives from the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and the Peace Council also addressed the gathering, reinforcing Sisco’s message. They encouraged participants to lead by example in their communities, emphasizing that peaceful elections are crucial for national progress.

The event concluded with a friendly football match between Jamaica Youth and Zongo Youth Alliance, symbolizing unity and healthy competition. The thrilling game ended with a 2-1 victory for the Jamaica Youth team, leaving participants in high spirits and underscoring the importance of camaraderie.

Sisco’s peace walk has left an indelible mark on Wa’s youth, demonstrating the power of unity and collective action in fostering peace. The initiative served as a reminder that youth play a pivotal role in maintaining stability, not just during elections but in everyday life.

The event has set a powerful precedent for peaceful engagement, urging communities across the Upper West Region and Ghana to prioritize harmony and unity. As Ghana gears up for the elections, the peace walk stands as a beacon of hope for a violence-free process, driven by the energy and commitment of the youth.
