The Upper West Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has released the list of nominees for the inaugural edition of the Annual Regional GJA Awards.

The event, set for Saturday, September 7, 2024, in Wa, aims to honor and celebrate journalists who excelled in their professional practice over the past year.

Among the nominees is Ibrahim Wangara, Media General’s Upper West Regional Correspondent, who will compete alongside other seasoned journalists for the prestigious awards.

In total, eight competitive awards are expected to be presented in this maiden awards scheme. The nominated journalists include Philip Tengzu of Ghana News Agency, Lydia Darlington Fordjour of the Ghanaian Times, Ibrahim Wangara of Media General (TV3), and Rafiq Salam of Multimedia Group (Joy News). Additionally, two veteran journalists and other nominees are in contention for multiple awards.

The Regional Secretary of the Ghana Journalists Association, Prosper Kwame Koursoh, announced the nominees in a press statement. He stated that the selection process focused on key criteria such as captivating headlines, strong introductions, multiple sources and interviews, coherent presentations, verified facts and data references, excellent language use, and balanced reporting.

Over 20 entries were reviewed by a three-member panel of veteran journalists, ultimately leading to the selection of eight winners, including the overall best journalist. The vetting committee noted some concerns about the quality of many submissions but expressed optimism for higher standards in future editions.

The theme for this year’s awards is: “Sustaining Ghana’s Democracy before, during, and after the 2024 General Elections: The Role of Peace Journalism.”

The upcoming event promises to be a remarkable celebration of journalistic excellence in the Upper West Region.
