Upper West : Bahass foundation warns against inappropriate donations, citing cowries, goat head, mix grains and others

Mr. Eliasu , the CEO of Bahass Foundation, has issued a strong caution to the general public against sending inappropriate items as donations to the Bahass mental home.

Speaking to Radio Progress, Mr. Eliasu narrated how individuals have been approaching the mental home with strange items as donations or sadaqah (charitable giving).

He recounted a recent incident where a woman, approximately 40 years old, brought a goat’s head as a donation, claiming her “mallam” (spiritual leader) instructed her to donate it to the mentally challenged inmates. Mr. Eliasu promptly turned her away, insisting that such forms of sadaqah are not welcome at the mental home.

He also shared other unsettling occurrences, including an elderly woman requesting the shirt of an inmate and a group of young men asking for the nails and hair of his inmates.

While acknowledging the vital role the general public plays in the welfare of the inmates through donations covering feeding, accommodation, and health, Mr. Eliasu was quick to add that such inappropriate donations are not acceptable at Bahass Foundation. He sternly warned that any individual or group attempting to bring such items should stop.

“I am from Dondoli, and I believe in sadaqah, but not this type of inappropriate sadaqah. Bahass Foundation is run by the general public through generous donations, and grants, but for individuals who bring cowries, mixed grains, goat head, and other forms of inappropriate donation, they aren’t acceptable,” he stated.

Acknowledging the acceptable forms of donation, he explained that preparing a meal—be it TZ, rice, banku, or any other food—is welcome. Such donations would be gladly accepted, and they would even eat together with the person who brought it.

Mr. Eliasu continues to appeal for legitimate support to care for the residents in the mental home. Donations can be made through the number 0244690159.
