A leading member of Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign team, Kwaku Alex, has sparked a heated debate with his statement suggesting that it would be unwise for two Northerners to contest for the presidency in the upcoming 2024 elections.

The statement has raised questions about tribal politics and the need for a non-Northerner to be chosen as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer.

In an interview on Amasaman BX TV, Kwaku Alex expressed his concern, stating, “We cannot sit in the country for two Northerners to contest for the Presidency. That cannot happen. We cannot have a Northerner for NDC and Northerner for NPP. We are not engaged in tribal politics but this should be put across.”

He further added, “When Muslims are fasting, government and other individuals give out sugar among other things but have you seen Muslims give Christians anything during their Easter and other festivities? They can’t be made to enjoy all that privilege.”

The statement has sparked a lively debate regarding tribal politics and the merits of having a diverse presidential race. As the NPP prepares for its flagbearer elections scheduled for November 4, ten individuals have expressed interest in contesting for the position. Among them are Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Trade and Industry Minister John Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, MP for Assin Central Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, and former Minister for Food and Agriculture Dr. Owusu Afriyie-Akoto, among others.
