The Dagaaba people of Wa in the Upper West Region of Ghana have a unique and elaborate funeral and burial tradition for their deceased loved ones. Here are some of the steps involved in the burial process:

    1.  Notification of relatives: When someone dies in the Dagaaba community, relatives and friends are notified immediately. The deceased is then washed and prepared for burial by close family members.
  1.  2.  Funeral rites: Before the actual burial, a series of funeral rites are performed, including the slaughtering of an animal to symbolize the deceased’s journey to the afterlife, and the performance of traditional dances and music.

  1.  3.  Selection of burial spot: The family of the deceased then selects a suitable burial spot, which is typically located near the family compound.

  1.  4.  Preparation of the grave: The grave is then dug by family members and friends, and is lined with stones and covered with a wooden or metal lid.

  1.  5. Dressing of the deceased: The body of the deceased is dressed in traditional clothing and is usually covered with a white cloth

  1. 6.  Burial ceremony: On the day of the burial, the body is carried to the gravesite by family members and friends. The body is then lowered into the grave, and a family member places a symbolic object, such as a mirror or a comb, in the grave with the deceased.

  1. 7.  After-burial rites: After the burial, family members and friends gather at the deceased’s home to offer condolences and support to the bereaved family. Food and drinks are served, and traditional music and dance are performed.

The Dagaaba people believe that the deceased continue to play an important role in the community even after death, and they honor their loved ones through the funeral and burial tradition.
