Tourism vlogger Dennis Apusika treks from Bolgatanga to Accra after losing football bet
What began as a lighthearted football bet has evolved into a powerful campaign for sports infrastructure and tourism in Ghana’s Upper East Region. Dennis Apusika, a tourism vlogger and creator of the “Visit Bolga” social media platform, is currently trekking from Bolgatanga to Accra after vowing to embark on the journey if Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) lost to Chelsea in the FIFA Club World Cup.
The long walk commenced at 6:30 a.m. on July 22, 2025, from Bolgatanga, the capital of the Upper East Region, following the Eastern Corridor route.
Dennis Apusika has so far successfully covered the first leg of his journey. His route has taken him through Walewale in the North East Region, to Tamale, Yendi, and Bimbilla in the Nanumba North District of the Northern Region, and then to Damanko and Kpassa in the Nkwanta North District. He is now heading towards Nkwanta South in the Oti Region.
He indicated that, while the walk is to honor his pledge, “beyond that, the journey is to push for the construction of a sports stadium in the Upper East Region and to promote sports development and tourism.” Apusika explained.
Every step of his trek is more than a test of endurance; it’s an opportunity to engage with local communities, highlight the pressing need for sports facilities in the Upper East Region, and share the rich cultural and tourism potential of the area.
“This isn’t a competition, I’m walking carefully and responsibly,” Apusika said. “If I were covering fifty kilometers a day nonstop, I would reach Accra in two weeks, but I expect the journey to take about three to four weeks.”
Apusika’s campaign for a sports stadium effectively shines a light on long-standing infrastructure deficits in the northern part of Ghana, where the lack of key facilities hinders the development of athletic talent and limits the region’s tourism potential.
