With an estimated net worth of US$18.6 billion, the Dangote Group founder who is the richest person in Africa, richest black person and the 65th richest person in the world was reportedly bent on investing in Hearts of Oak but was prevented from doing so by a club official.
This claims was asserted by former national organiser of the club’s National Chapters Committee, Mohammed Alhassan.
Alhassan claims Dangote wanted to inject money and resources into Hearts by way of sponsorship, in memory of his friend John Evans Atta-Milla, who served as the club’s board chairman.
He stated that the juicy offer was made through former Mayor of Tema, Kempes Ofosu Ware, but fell through at the last minute after a club official restricted it from materializing.
“Dangote wanted to support Hearts of Oak with a big sponsorship but he pulled out because of someone’s personal interest,” the former supporters capo told Angel FM.
“Dangote wanted to sponsor Hearts of Oak to honour Professor Mills because of their relationship. Kempes Ofosu Ware was at that time, the MCE at Tema. Kempes finished everything only for someone to appear and said over his dead body and that person was Akambi.
“I was part of the delegation that went to Nigeria. Myself, Kempes and three others. Togbe Afede had travelled and instructed that the letter be sent to his desk. At the board meeting, the issue was never raised. Kempes gave us Ishmael Addo, Dong Bortey, Bossman, and others.”
Dangote is known to be a passionate football fan, with his favorite team being Arsenal and has previously pointed out his willingness to buy the club, which is currently owned by American sports and entertainment holding company – Kroenke Sports & Entertainment.
