In some time, past, every mortuary man was perceived to be a northerner because they were those who could muster the courage to engage in that kind of work.

If the claims of the Ashanti Regional President of the Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) are anything to go by, then northerners have been overtaken by their brothers from the south.

Mr Ebenezer Essilifie who hails from the Central Region and has been a mortuary man since 2003 revealed that southerners mostly Asantes now dominate in the trade.

“Unlike in the past where it was only northerners seen being mortuary men, now we have almost every tribe doing the job. If you come to where I am, we have Gas, Ewes, Fantes and other tribes. Once you express interest, apply and given the opportunity, you ought to start working. Your tribe or where you hail from is not part of the requirements any longer”, he revealed in an interview with AMBASSADOR TV hosted by Josephine Esi Pipitha known as Pipi.

Asked which tribe or dominant in the business he replied “Northerners are gradually phasing out. The Asante are many in the system now…I tell you. At first, they were scared but now they are doing the job in their numbers. I got employed as a mortuary man and I have not died and made a lot of progress. If you are motivated seeing me, apply and you are picked that becomes your mainstay”, he revealed.

According to Mr Ebenezer Essilifie disclosed that the salary is not as expected but once you remain committed to the job, clients appreciate your efforts and that is even more than how much you receive as salary at the end of the month.
