In a move aimed at addressing the delays in trainee allowances, President John Dramani Mahama has announced that, going forward, the Controller and Accountant General’s Department will directly pay the allowances of nursing and teacher trainees in Ghana.

Speaking during a Thank You tour in Tamale, the northern regional capital, on Saturday, March 22, 2025, President Mahama stated that the new system would ensure that trainees receive their allowances at the same time as public sector workers receive their salaries.

He emphasized that this approach, which has been incorporated into the national compensation budget, will permanently eliminate the delays that have plagued previous payment systems.

“There is good news for nursing and teacher trainees. Nursing and teacher trainee allowances are now to be paid directly by the Controller and Accountant General. This will eliminate delays in the payment process and ensure that trainees are paid promptly. From now on, whenever public sector workers receive their salaries, nursing and teacher trainees will also receive their allowances,” President Mahama said.

The issue of allowances for trainee teachers and nurses was a critical subject during the 2016 election campaigns, which became a major challenge for President Mahama’s first term in office. His administration had made commitments regarding the timely payment of these allowances, a promise that was not fully met, especially during the tenure of the past Akufo-Addo administration, which faced criticism for delayed payments and arrears running into several months.

This new initiative is expected to restore confidence among nursing and teacher trainees, ensuring that they receive their rightful allowances without unnecessary delays.
