Parents have expressed concerns about the material in a history textbook intended for basic 4-level students, particularly in reference to Christianity.

There is a part in the book “History of Ghana for Basic Schools,” written by Francis Benjamin Appiah and Henry David Appiah, that discusses the unfavorable effects of Christian missionary work.

One argument made in the book contends that the rise in poverty in Ghana has been facilitated by Christianity.

In addition, the book offers the opinion that religion, particularly Christianity, has played a key role in the nation’s doctrinal and physical conflicts.

Parents have expressed their concerns about these materials because they think that they could develop prejudice and possibly lead to rifts between various faith communities.

They are requesting a revision of the textbook to make sure that religious themes are presented in a more neutral and impartial manner, fostering an atmosphere of tolerance, understanding, and respect for all religious views and practices in Ghana.
