The youth wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), a major opposition party in Ghana, has announced a robust course of action aimed at pressuring the government to withdraw the recently implemented 10% betting tax.
This series of actions comes in response to the introduction of a 10% withholding tax on winnings from bets. The NDC youth wing asserts that this tax disproportionately impacts young Ghanaians who partake in betting as a form of entertainment and sometimes even a source of livelihood.
In an official press statement, George Opare Addo, the National Youth Organiser of the NDC, expressed the unwavering determination of the youth wing to safeguard the funds earned by young people through betting. He stated, “Our determination to protect the funds young people secure through betting is unyielding. Through agitations, protests, advocacy, and civic engagements, we will ensure our voices are heard and demand that this CORRUPT Akufo-Addo/Bawumia Government rescind its decision.”
The outlined plan of action reflects their commitment to this cause:
- Picket at the Ministry of Finance and Government Offices: The NDC youth wing intends to stage pickets at the Ministry of Finance and occupy various government offices across the nation.
- Nationwide Agitations: They plan to initiate and escalate lawful agitations across the country, using both conventional and unconventional methods, as a way of demonstrating their resistance.
- Engagement of Officials: The youth wing aims to encourage young people to confront government officials and demand an end to what they perceive as corruption and insensitivity on the part of the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration.
- Parliamentary Occupation: The NDC youth wing’s plan includes occupying the premises of Parliament and other government agencies to make their concerns heard.
The NDC’s actions underscore their firm belief that the introduced betting tax has wider implications for the young generation’s financial prospects and opportunities. The youth wing’s determination to challenge this tax reflects their commitment to advocating for policies that genuinely consider the needs and aspirations of the youth.
