NDC orders MPs to suspend constituent-level campaigning

In all national constituencies where it has sitting Members of Parliament, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced a suspension of election-related activities (MPs).

The party claims that the directive is in support of the Minority Caucus’ opposition to the objectionable Constitutional Instrument (CI) that the Election Commission is attempting to present to Parliament.

This was stated in a letter to all constituency chairs that was signed by the general secretary, Fifi Kwetey.

In the announcement, it was said that the choice had been made at the Functional Executive Committee meeting on March 7th.

All currently serving NDC MPs must attend all parliamentary sessions in addition to the suspension of campaigns. No member may engage in any travel that will interfere with their ability to attend.

The message ordered the immediate recall of every MP who had traveled.

The regional and constituency executives and aspirants are hereby asked to guarantee strict compliance with the foregoing instructions, it was further said in the statement.

The order, known as Operation Preserve Our Democracy, will be in effect from March 7 to March 31, 2023.

“All parliamentary aspirants are hereby directed in their own interest, to strictly adhere to these directives as a breach of same shall attract severe sanctions.”

Meanwhile, the dates for the filing of nominations, vetting of parliamentary aspirants and parliamentary primaries shall remain unchanged.
