On May 1st, 2024, Catherine Kuupol Kuutor from the upper west region of Ghana made history as she was appointed the General Manager of GoldFields Ghana’s Tarkwa Mine, becoming Ghana’s first Female Mine General Manager. This landmark achievement highlights Catherine’s remarkable journey in the mining industry, marked by resilience, dedication, and breaking barriers.

Catherine’s trailblazing career began in 2002 with a Diploma in Mineral Engineering from KNUST School of Mines, followed by a Master’s degree from UMaT in 2011. Currently pursuing her Ph.D. at UMaT, Catherine continues to deepen her expertise in the field while advocating for opportunities and representation of women in mining.

Her illustrious career includes pivotal roles at Golden Star Wassa Mine and Abosso Gold Fields Limited – Damang Gold Mine, where she spearheaded business enhancement initiatives leading to notable improvements in gold recovery processes. Catherine’s unwavering dedication to her profession and colleagues has earned her widespread recognition, including awards from the Ghana Chamber of Mines and GoldFields CEO.

Beyond her professional achievements, Catherine is committed to empowering women in mining. She sponsors annual academic awards for outstanding achievements in mineral engineering at UmaT, fostering the growth of women in the field.
