The Upper West Regional Hospital (UWRH) in Wa has received a significant donation of medical supplies, marking a crucial milestone in the ongoing efforts to improve healthcare delivery in northern Ghana. The donation, which came from the Learning for Lives (LfL) team, a partnership between the University of Limerick (UL) and the UL Hospitals Group, Ireland, was made possible through the support of ESTHER Ireland grants.
A large container filled with a variety of essential medical supplies was officially handed over to the hospital, further strengthening its capacity to provide quality healthcare to the people of the Upper West Region. This marks the fourth donation of medical supplies to the hospital by the LfL team in the past three years.
Dr. Dominic Akaateba, a physician specialist and the local team leader of LfL-Ghana as well as the Country Director of Ghana Medical Help (GMH), expressed the team’s ongoing dedication to addressing healthcare challenges in underserved areas. “This is the fourth 4ft container of medical supplies we’re donating to the Upper West Regional Hospital in just three years. This is part of our broader mission to ensure equitable healthcare delivery across northern Ghana,” said Dr. Akaateba.
He further emphasized that these supplies are critical in empowering hospitals with the tools needed to provide quality healthcare and save lives. The ongoing support from LfL and its partners has been pivotal in ensuring that hospitals like the Upper West Regional Hospital can handle emergencies and provide comprehensive care.
The medical supplies donated include an array of vital healthcare resources designed to improve maternal and child health, manage surgical cases, and enhance the hospital’s ability to respond to emergency situations. These supplies are expected to play a key role in strengthening the hospital’s capacity to provide timely and effective healthcare to the growing population in the region.
Dr. Robert Amesiya, the Medical Director of the Upper West Regional Hospital, thanked the LfL team and its partners for their invaluable support. “This support comes at a crucial time when our facility is handling a growing number of complex cases. It will significantly enhance our ability to provide timely and efficient healthcare to the people of this region,” Dr. Amesiya noted.
The Learning for Lives-Ghana team has been instrumental in improving healthcare across the Upper West Region. From 2016 to 2019, the team supported emergency care services by training healthcare workers and supplying emergency medical kits to all CHPS (Community-based Health Planning and Services) facilities in the region. This ongoing partnership continues to address critical resource gaps in the healthcare sector, contributing to a more resilient healthcare system in northern Ghana.
The management of Upper West Regional Hospital has committed to utilizing these medical supplies effectively to enhance patient care. They expressed their sincere gratitude to the LfL team and all its partners for their continued support, which has had a lasting impact on healthcare delivery in the region.
