Labour minister to meet NLC over nurse’s assault at Ridge Hospital

Ghana’s Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment, Dr. Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, has announced plans to meet with the Labour Commission following the recent assault on a nurse at the Ridge Hospital in Accra. The Minister stated that the engagement would seek advice on the incident and explore comprehensive measures to strengthen worker safety nationwide.

Dr. Pelpuo disclosed this on Thursday when he appeared before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to answer questions on financial irregularities cited in the 2024 Auditor-General’s Report. His announcement follows an earlier condemnation of the attack by the Minister of Health, Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, who also pledged to settle the victim’s medical bills and replace her stolen phone.

Responding to a question from the PAC Chairperson and Atiwa East MP, Madam Abena Osei Asare, Dr. Pelpuo assured that his Ministry would introduce safeguards to protect workers and enhance the capacity of the Labour Commission to handle such cases across the regions.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has established a committee to investigate the incident, including security lapses at the hospital and reported delays in patient care. The Ridge Hospital management has since provided the assaulted nurse with a replacement phone and GH₵800 cash support for her recovery.

The Parliamentary Health Committee has also condemned the assault, attributing gaps in health sector recruitment under the previous administration as a factor that worsened security challenges in health facilities.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many calling for stricter security measures in hospitals and greater respect for healthcare professionals.
