The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially announced the release of the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results, as stated in a press release on October 19, 2024.
According to the council, the results for school candidates will be distributed to their respective schools through the Metropolitan/Municipal/District Directors of Education.
Malpractices and Cancellations
During the examination process, WAEC detected multiple malpractices. After thorough investigations, the Final Awards and Examiners’ Appointment Committee, in its 35th meeting held on October 16, 2024, made several decisions regarding the malpractices:
Subject results for 377 school candidates and 3 private candidates were cancelled. These candidates were found guilty of bringing foreign materials into the exam hall or colluding with others during the examination.
The entire results of 41 school candidates and 1 private candidate were also cancelled due to severe irregularities.
The results of 33 school candidates and 3 private candidates are currently withheld as further investigations continue into their cases.

Additionally, results from 149 schools have been withheld due to reported malpractices. These results may either be cancelled or released depending on the outcome of ongoing investigations.
2024 BECE Statistics
This year’s examination saw 569,236 candidates register for the school-based examination, comprising 282,703 males and 286,533 females from 19,505 schools. The exam took place across 2,123 centres nationwide, with 3,845 candidates reported as absent.
The BECE for private candidates had 1,390 entrants, including 750 males and 640 females, who sat for the exam at 15 centres primarily located in regional capitals. Among them, 57 private candidates were marked absent.
