Former President John Dramani Mahama emphasized the need for job creation opportunities in Africa’s public sector during his speech at the Korea-Africa Business Summit 2023. He recognized the importance of creating an environment where the private sector can thrive and generate more employment.
According to Mr. Mahama, a renewed partnership between Korea and Africa can contribute to creating these conditions. He expressed the belief that Africa’s young people are eager to work towards a brighter future and stated that Korea can assist in empowering African innovators and entrepreneurs, helping them break free from the cycle of unemployment.

He highlighted the abundance of latent talent and skills among Africa’s youth, despite the current challenging circumstances. Mr. Mahama stressed that it is the duty of leaders to unlock and unleash this untapped potential.
In addition, he called for engagement with Korea from multiple angles, enabling African youth to learn from the successful Korean turn-around story. He suggested that Korea could collaborate with Ghana and other African nations to develop smart cities, social housing, and collaborative platforms in areas such as payment systems, artificial intelligence, and robotics.
Mr. Mahama emphasized the need for fundamental shifts in how African economies operate, including sound economic management, comprehensive governance reforms, and equitable distribution of the proceeds of economic growth. He argued that monetary policy should be focused on sustainable growth and ensuring fair sharing of its benefits.
