Known poet and dramatist Professor Ama Ata Aidoo passed away today in Accra, and his demise is mourned by the literary community and Ghana.

According to a statement from her family, the iconic author, who is renowned for her enormous contributions to African literature, passed away in the early hours of May 31, 2023.

In a moving statement, the family relayed the sad news of Prof. Aidoo’s passing after a brief illness and expressed their sincere sadness.

The family of PROF. AMA ATA AIDOO released the following statement to the public: “The Family of PROF. AMA ATA AIDOO, with deep sorrow but in the hope of the resurrection, informs the general public that our beloved relative and writer passed away in the early hours of this morning, Wednesday, 31st May 2023, after a short illness.”

Funeral plans have not yet been released, and the family has politely asked for privacy during this trying time. The loss of Prof. Ama Aidoo signifies the end of an era for African writing and creates a sizable gap in the literary world.

Christina Ama Ata Aidoo was a prolific author who had a major influence on subsequent generations of African women writers. She was born on March 23, 1942, in Abeadzi Kyiakor, close to Saltpond, in Ghana’s Central Region.

Prof. Aidoo wrote acclaimed novels, plays, short tales, children’s books, and poems that portrayed the spirit of African life, culture, and the hardships encountered by women during her brilliant career. Her literary creations challenged preexisting narratives and changed the literary scene by bringing African perspectives to the fore.

Although some sources list Prof. Aidoo’s birthdate as March 31, 1940, it is obvious that her life was one of incredible accomplishments and constant devotion to her trade. Her contributions to literature will always be valued, and she will continue to have a positive influence on upcoming generations of authors.
