Abdul Ganiyu Ismail, formerly the captain of Asante Kotoko, has joined Al Talaba SC of the Iraqi Premier League.

The 26-year-old has agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Al Shaab Stadium club, with an additional year added if he performs well.

After the 2021/22 season of the Iraqi Premier League, Al Talaba SC had the third-best record.

The veteran centre defender left Kotoko before the start of the 2022/23 Ghana football season for reasons that are yet unknown.

When he was on the field, he was an integral part of the defense that led the Porcupine Warriors to the top of the Ghana Premier League.

When Ganiyu first started training with the defending champions of the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League, he was shockingly left off the list of players who would be making the trip to Sudan for the club’s second part of preseason.

The team had already stated its intention to relieve Abdul Ganiyu Ismail of his leadership prior to his dismissal.

New captain Richard Boadu of the midfielders was announced last week, with assistants Ibrahim Danlad, Christopher Nettey, and Moise Pouaty.

In 2018, Asante Kotoko paid an unknown sum to acquire Ganiyu Ismail from Karela United.
