The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has officially announced Faustina Akurugu Elikplim of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the duly elected Member of Parliament (MP) for the Dome Kwabenya constituency. This declaration follows a period of intense dispute between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the NDC over the election results.

The announcement was made during an emergency meeting of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) on Tuesday, December 31, where Jean Mensa, the EC Chairperson, confirmed that the electoral process for Dome Kwabenya had officially come to a close.

Following the re-collation of votes, Faustina Akurugu Elikplim secured 50,967 votes, while her NPP opponent, Mike Oquaye Junior, garnered 50,669 votes. The margin of victory was a narrow 298 votes, underscoring the highly competitive nature of the contest.

In her remarks, Jean Mensa emphasized that the EC’s responsibility is to uphold the will of the people, ensuring that the outcome of the election reflects the true choice of the electorate. She stated, “Today, we are pleased to announce that the proceedings and collation at the Dome Kwabenya Constituency have come to a close. It has gone full circle, and we are convinced beyond any shadow of a doubt that the outcome reflects the will of the people as expressed at the polls.”

The EC Chairperson further added, “Ours is not to make anybody president or MP. Ours is to ensure that our outcome and processes guarantee that the people’s choice is upheld.”

With the official declaration, the long-standing contestation over the Dome Kwabenya seat has now been resolved. Faustina Akurugu Elikplim is set to assume her role as the Member of Parliament for the constituency, marking a significant victory for the NDC.

The EC’s decision also means that the planned re-run at the outstanding polling station in the constituency has been cancelled, further solidifying Elikplim’s victory and ending any remaining uncertainty regarding the election results.

Faustina Akurugu Elikplim’s victory puts an end to the contentious battle for the Dome Kwabenya seat, and she is now poised to represent her constituents in Parliament. The election results reaffirm the importance of electoral integrity, transparency, and the role of the EC in ensuring that the people’s choice is respected.
