The £100,000 fund will give African graduate students at Oxford University access to money for unforeseen and urgent financial needs. Additionally, it will enable students to “engage in activities that will ensure the pursuit of greatness.”

“I experienced first-hand the differences in university living experiences for students hailing from my continent, Africa,” said DJ Cuppy, an African studies graduate from the University of Oxford. To close resource gaps for those who need it most so they can fully commit to getting the education they deserve, that is the essential role that the Cuppy Fund will play.

The previously formed Africa Oxford Initiative (AfOx), which works across the University “to make engagement with Africa a strategic priority for Oxford,” will receive financing from the fund. The contribution would enable the initiative, which encourages more African students to enroll in graduate programs at the university, to “address the needs of the most vulnerable students,” including those with any kind of impairment.

We are overjoyed that Cuppy is so generously sponsoring African graduate students here at Oxford, said Dr. Anne Makena, co-director of AfOx. We both have the same experience as African graduate students at Oxford, thus it is an enormous honor for AfOx to collaborate with Cuppy to address some of the particular difficulties that African students could have there. Additionally, Makena wished that the fund would enable graduate students to “go on to extraordinary careers as champions of development in African countries and beyond.”

It aims to support future leaders from the continent by enabling them to access the necessary skills, resources and networks to maximise their impact. Over the next 10 years, my hope is to support those in their education journeys and reach their full potential during their time at Oxford and beyond 🙏🏾🕊️ #CuppyCares.”
