The 2023 BET Awards took place at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles and had a special focus on celebrating 50 years of hip-hop. The event featured performances and tributes from various artists.

The show kicked off with an opening performance by Lil Uzi Vert, followed by a series of musical medleys curated by Kid Capri, featuring hip-hop pioneers such as The Sugar Hill Gang, MC Lyte, D-Nice, Big Daddy Kane, and a tribute to the late Biz Markie.

Other notable performances throughout the night included Fat Joe, Ja Rule, Jeezy, Kid ‘N Play, Master P, Redman, Remy Ma, Soulja Boy, Styles P, Warren G, Trina, and Trick Daddy.

Drake emerged as the top nominee of the evening with seven nominations, including Best Male Hip Hop Artist, Album of the Year for “Her Loss” with 21 Savage, and the Viewer’s Choice Award. 21 Savage and Lizzo followed closely behind with five nominations each, while artists like Beyoncé, Burna Boy, Chris Brown, Ice Spice, and SZA received four nominations.

During the event, Patti LaBelle paid tribute to the late Tina Turner, honoring her contributions to rock and roll. Additionally, Busta Rhymes was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his significant impact on the music industry.

The 2023 BET Awards provided a platform to celebrate the rich history of hip-hop and honor artists who have made lasting contributions to the genre.
