Hundreds of residents in Wa converged on the regional police headquarters on Monday, August 19, 2024, to voice their frustration over the delayed prosecution of two suspects linked to the murder of Jontong Naa Mutala Mahama, a respected chief in the town.

The residents had initially gathered at the Wa district court, hoping to witness the legal proceedings. However, after waiting for hours, they were informed that the case would not be called, sparking anger and leading to a tense confrontation with the police. The situation escalated, resulting in the arrest of one individual from the crowd.

The unrest was eventually brought under control, and the case was later heard at the district court, where the two accused persons were remanded into prison custody. Their next court appearance has been scheduled for 19th August 2024.

The murder of Jontong Naa Mutala Mahama on April 11, 2024, shocked the Wa community. Initially, one suspect was arrested but later released on bail. Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of another suspect on August 17, 2024, who, during an identification parade, identified the first suspect as his accomplice and a closed friend to the deceased.

In response to the rising tensions, Principal State Attorney Saed Abdul-Shakur urged the residents to remain patient and trust the police as they continue their investigation into the series of killings that have disturbed the Wa municipality.

The community, still reeling from the loss of their chief, is anxiously awaiting justice and resolution in this high-profile case.
