In a somber update, the eldest son of the late Akua Donkor, Akwasi Baffour, has shared the heartbreaking details surrounding his mother’s sudden passing on Monday, October 28, 2024. Akua Donkor, an iconic figure in Ghanaian politics and founder of the Ghana Freedom Party, was reportedly in good health until the early hours of her final day.

In a phone interview with GhanaWeb, Baffour explained that he first received a distressing call at around 4 AM, notifying him that his mother was unwell. “We were shocked to hear about her condition because we hadn’t been informed of any health issues until then,” Baffour shared.

Once her condition became critical, family members in Accra quickly arranged for Akua Donkor to be taken to the Nsawam Government Hospital. Due to the severity of her condition, doctors there referred her to the Ridge Hospital (Greater Accra Regional Hospital) for further care. “With the way her condition was, she was rather referred to the Ridge Hospital,” Baffour explained.

At Ridge Hospital, doctors acted promptly, placing Akua Donkor on two drips and administering blood in hopes of stabilizing her condition. Baffour recalls speaking with the attending doctor, who expressed the gravity of the situation but assured the family that they were doing everything possible. “The doctor said my mother was in a difficult place but they were doing all they could,” he said.

Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, the family was informed around 10 PM that Akua Donkor did not survive. “The doctor called again to say that our mother had given up the ghost. They had tried to revive her throughout the day, but sadly, she didn’t make it,” Baffour said.

Baffour added that the family is still awaiting further information on the exact cause of her death. He also noted that she had been in good health as recently as three weeks prior, making her sudden decline even more shocking to the family.

Akua Donkor, who was 83 years old, leaves behind a legacy as a determined political figure in Ghana. Known for her straightforward and grassroots approach, she founded the Ghana Freedom Party and was a vocal advocate for Ghanaian independence and freedom. Her passing marks the end of an era, and she will be remembered for her unwavering dedication to her vision for Ghana.
