According to the head of the governing body, Patrice Motsepe, the African Football Confederation (CAF) has moved the dates of the upcoming African Cup of Nations finals to January 2024, six months later than originally planned.

Next season’s African Super League, which will formally debut on August 10th, was also confirmed by him.

Both decisions, particularly the Cup of Nations dates, which conflict once more with many of the players’ club obligations, were approved at a CAF conference in Morocco and are expected to cause controversy.

The Ivory Coast, which is still the host nation, was supposed to host the finals in June of the following year.

However, worries about the weather in west Africa in the middle of the year have forced a modification.

“We took a lot of advice and we decided we cannot take a risk, We don’t want to run the risk of that our top competition is going to be washed out.” Motsepe said.

In order to avoid the club vs. nation competition for its best players, CAF moved the hosting of its continental championship to the middle of the year in 2019.

The previous edition, however, was played in Cameroon in January due to weather issues and the Covid-19 outbreak, which reignited complaints from teams in Europe obliged to release their African players for national duty in the middle of the season.

He made a suggestion that CAF would now be allowed to postpone the September qualifying games in order to provide its five World Cup finals participants the possibility to book more challenging friendlies against nations from other continents as part of their preparation for Qatar.

He insisted that the new Super League wouldn’t take the place of Africa’s current Champions League but would not provide any further information regarding its composition.

In August, he announced, a launch would take place at the CAF Congress in Arusha, Tanzania.
