The Upper West Regional Office of the Narcotic Control Commission has called on residents in the Upper West Region to provide support and assistance to individuals battling drug addiction.

Recognizing the importance of a collective effort, the commission has conducted sensitization programs to educate the community on the significance of supporting those who wish to overcome drug abuse.

During an interview with Info Radio on the occasion of the 2023 International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drugs Trafficking, Mr. Stephen Kobom, the Upper West Media Engagement Officer of the Narcotic Control Commission, appealed to residents to abandon stigmatization and discrimination towards drug addicts and instead show them love and support.

Mr. Dominic Naaikuu, another Media Engagement Officer with the commission, raised concerns about the increasing number of young people in the Upper West Region engaging in Shisha smoking, emphasizing its dangerous health implications. He advised young individuals to refrain from patronizing Shisha and its associated risks.

The commission also highlighted the crucial role of parents in prevention efforts. They encouraged parents to serve as positive role models for their children and closely monitor their activities, including their choice of friends.

The 2023 International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drugs Trafficking was commemorated under the theme “People First, Stop Stigma and Discrimination, Strengthen Prevention.” This underscores the significance of prioritizing support for individuals battling addiction, eradicating stigmatization, and reinforcing prevention measures.

The Upper West Regional Narcotic Control Commission continues to emphasize the importance of community involvement, understanding, and empathy to combat drug addiction effectively. By fostering a supportive environment, raising awareness, and promoting prevention, the region can work towards a drug-free future.
