A clash has erupted between Alhassan Suhuyini, the Member of Parliament for Tamale North, and Samuel Abu Jinapor, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, over the sale of the land housing the Timber Market in Tamale.

The controversy stems from allegations that traders are losing their livelihoods without proper compensation. Conflicting statements and accusations have intensified the dispute between the MP and the Minister.

Alhassan Suhuyini, summoning the Minister to Parliament, expressed deep concern over the sale of the land without compensation for the traders who have occupied it for decades. He raised the issue of livelihoods being affected by the government’s decision, demanding answers and resolution.

In response, Samuel Abu Jinapor refuted the claims made by the Tamale North MP. He asserted that the government followed due process in leasing the land to a private developer, in line with the redevelopment plan initiated during the Rawlings administration. The Minister also assured that compensation would be provided to those affected by the redevelopment.

While defending his actions, Minister Jinapor accused MP Suhuyini of failing to be present in Parliament to personally ask the question. He highlighted the importance of active participation in parliamentary proceedings.

In response, Suhuyini argued that he had been engaged in a meeting with the Environmental Protection Agency and lost track of time. He emphasized his commitment to his parliamentary duties and stated that the Minister’s responses appeared arrogant.

MP Suhuyini further claimed that the Tamale Lands Commission denied the sale of the Timber Market land, contradicting the Minister’s statements. He referred to reports and a press conference held in May 2021 as evidence supporting his position. The conflicting statements from both sides have added to the controversy surrounding the sale of the land.
