Residents of Yelibato, a neighborhood close to Nogokpo in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region, are in shock after learning that Mr. Christian Kwame Amuzu, the former Assemblyman for the Nogokpo-Ativuta electoral area, was found dead.

Early on June 14, 2023, the 60-year-old’s body was discovered hanging from a rope in his living room.

The late Assemblyman’s wife, Madam Baby Amuzu, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that her husband had not previously voiced any complaints.

She claimed that while it was the deceased’s custom to drive their kids to school every morning, on the tragic day, she was ordered to do it instead, without providing any explanation.

She claimed that after dropping off the kids at school, she came home to discover the deceased hanging from a rope in their living room.

The deceased’s meeting with the current Assemblyman for the region, Mr. Jonas Fotor Agbagba, took place just one day before to the tragedy, and they discussed the electoral area’s progress. Mr. Agbagba questioned what would have caused the deceased to commit suicide.

“I just met with him yesterday. As you know, the local Assembly elections are coming up, so we had some discussions about how to best position myself for the election as well as some other matters relating to the development of the electoral area.”

He is someone who genuinely cares about the community, so Mr. Agbagba lamented, “I just can’t believe he could do this to himself.”

Many locals are now questioning whether the unfortunate incident had anything to do with the recent standoff between the chiefs and people of Nogokpo and Archbishop Charles Agyinasare, the founder and general overseer of the Perez Chapel International, and the strange passing of the former Assemblyman.

The body of the deceased had been deposited at the Sacred Heart morgue at Abor, while the Agbozume Police command had begun investigations into the incident.
