The Upper West Region of Ghana actively participated in the nationwide commemoration of Green Ghana Day on Friday. The region aimed to plant 300,000 seedlings as part of the national target of ten million seedlings. The theme for the 2023 edition of Green Ghana Day in the region was “Our Forest; Our Health.” The event took place at the regional hospital, with the presence of traditional leaders, departmental heads, security agencies, and schools.

During the launch of the program, Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih, the Upper West Regional Minister, emphasized the importance of the initiative in combating desertification, as the region is vulnerable due to its proximity to the Sahara Desert. The minister led the way by planting a tree at the premises of the Upper West Regional Hospital, followed by other departmental heads.

Dr. Salih commended traditional leaders in the region, particularly the Paramount Chief of the Pulima Traditional Area, Kuoro Osman Deiwia Nankpa III, for his efforts in banning negative environmental practices to protect the environment.

Mr. Godfred Quashigah, the Upper West Regional Manager of the Forestry Commission, encouraged the regional education directorate to establish Green clubs in schools to promote tree planting in the region.

Dr. Robert Amesiya, the Medical Director of the Upper West Regional Hospital, highlighted the success of last year’s Green Ghana Day, with over 80% of the 915 trees planted within the hospital premises surviving. He expressed appreciation to the Regional Minister, the Forestry Commission, and all stakeholders involved for choosing to commemorate the event at the regional hospital.

In a message on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, Mr. John Allotey, residents of the Upper West Region were urged to exceed the target of 300,000 seedlings and to nurture and care for the planted trees.

The participation of the Upper West Region in Green Ghana Day reflects the collective effort to combat desertification, protect the environment, and promote the well-being of the region and its inhabitants.
