Ghanaian singer, Wendy Shay has blamed the low streams by Ghanaian musicians on the high cost of data in the country.

According to the Rufftown Records signee, the cost of data in Ghana is relatively high as compared to other countries in Africa, and is the number one reason why Ghanaian musicians have low streams.

In an interview on Accra FM with Nana Romeo, Wendy Shay expressed that Ghanaians need to be educated to move from the years of downloading for free, to paying to stream music online.

‘‘So, number one, definitely education, people are noticing but we have to educate Ghanaians more to stop downloading from YouTube and other free platforms and register, subscribe and stream the songs, that is how we can gain income,’’ she stated.

The “Uber Driver” hitmaker also argued that making data affordable for Ghanaians will help push streaming numbers of musicians.

‘‘I think here in Ghana the data is very expensive because I did a research and in other countries in East Africa, their data is affordable and so on their YouTube and other platforms, they have more streams and it is something that has to be resolved,” she explained.

Wendy Shay also threw a challenge to her colleague musicians to come together and address the issue in hopes that it will be resolved.

“The data is expensive and I think the celebrities should come together so we use a platform to channel and resolve the issue, people come from other countries and complain about the cost of data and it has been a reason why Ghanaian musicians have low streams,’’ she added.
