Upper West : Six medical doctors graduated through Hajia Humu Awudu facilitated scholarship scheme
Six medical doctors have successfully graduated from a scholarship scheme facilitated by Hajia Humu Awudu, the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Wa Central. These graduates completed their medical studies in Cuba over the past six years.
The cohort includes one female from the Northern Region (the only female among them), one individual from the South, two from Sissala land, and the remaining from Wa Central. All have now successfully completed their medical training.
According to Hajia Humu Awudu, she had the opportunity to sell each of the scholarship slots for $15,000 but resolutely refused. Instead, she chose to seek out less privileged individuals who she believed truly deserved the opportunity.
“A friend brought someone who wanted to buy the scholarship slots for $15,000 each. But I refused. Instead, I went searching for the less privileged who truly deserved it,” she recounted.
She admitted that the process of identifying qualified candidates, preparing their travel documents, and readying them for interviews was not an easy feat. She also highlighted the challenges she faced in ensuring their continued inclusion on the list when others attempted to replace them.
“It wasn’t easy finding qualified candidates, getting passports, police reports, preparing for interviews… I struggled. I prayed. I even had to fight to keep them on the list when others tried to replace them,” she stated.
These newly graduated medical doctors are expected to return to Ghana soon. They have expressed their willingness and commitment to serve in their various districts and other remote areas – an outcome that aligns perfectly with the very essence of Hajia Humu Awudu’s facilitation of the scholarships.
