Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on Ambrose Dery, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for the Nandom Constituency, to retire peacefully and avoid employing tactics that could foment unrest during the upcoming December 7 elections.

Speaking during his two-day campaign tour in the Upper West Region, Asiedu Nketia commended Ambrose Dery for his contributions, particularly his role in recruiting locals into security services as Minister for the Interior. However, he emphasized that the time had come for Ambrose to step aside, describing him as a “sunset” figure whose era has passed.

Nketia noted that Ambrose Dery’s tenure as Minister for the Interior under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration should mark the culmination of his political career. He highlighted that since Akufo-Addo’s presidency is nearing its end, Ambrose legitimacy as a political leader in the Nandom constituency has also waned.

“Where we are now, he was a minister under Nana Akufo-Addo, but Akufo-Addo has two weeks for his term to expire. If your source of authority is from an expired President, then it means that you have also lost your legitimacy,” said Asiedu Nketia.

The NDC Chairman urged the people of Nandom to reward Ambrose Dery for his service by bestowing upon him a chieftaincy title, allowing him to transition gracefully into retirement. He warned Ambrose against resorting to forceful measures to retain his parliamentary seat, cautioning that such actions could tarnish his legacy.

“If your time is up and you don’t recognize it, you may end up destroying any positive record you have. My advice is that he should retire in peace to maintain the little respect he has in the Nandom constituency.”

Asiedu Nketia called on constituents to rally behind the NDC’s Parliamentary Candidate, Dr. Richard Kuu-ire, who he described as a capable leader ready to steer the constituency toward development. He asserted that Nandom deserves fresh leadership aligned with the NDC’s vision for national transformation.

The NDC Chairman concluded his remarks by appealing to the people of the Upper West Region to vote overwhelmingly for the NDC to restore Ghana’s economic stability and improve livelihoods.
