The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the provisional results for the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), marking a significant milestone for students across Ghana.
However, some candidates have encountered issues with their Creative Art and Design scores, which are being displayed as “Pending.” This has caused some anxiety among students and parents alike, but WAEC has offered reassurance by explaining the situation and providing updates regarding ongoing disciplinary actions related to exam irregularities.
Pending Creative Arts Scores Due to Script Upload Delays
WAEC has acknowledged that several candidates are seeing their Creative Art and Design results marked as “Pending.” This issue, according to WAEC, is not related to any misconduct but is instead the result of a delay in uploading the relevant examination scripts for assessment.
WAEC has reassured candidates that the delay is being addressed and that the Creative Art and Design scores will be updated shortly. They have asked students to check their results again next week, by which time the issue should be resolved, and the pending scores updated.
This clarification is crucial, as many students were concerned about the pending status of their scores, fearing it might indicate a problem with their performance. WAEC’s assurance will help ease these concerns as students await the finalization of their results.
WAEC Takes Disciplinary Actions for Exam Malpractices
In addition to addressing the pending Creative Art and Design scores, WAEC has also taken disciplinary action against a number of candidates following investigations into examination irregularities during the BECE.
The Final Awards and Examiners’ Appointment Committee for the BECE has handed down the following penalties after careful examination of evidence related to malpractices:
Subject Results Cancelled
WAEC has cancelled the subject results of 377 school candidates and 3 private candidates. These candidates were found to have brought foreign materials into the examination hall or engaged in collusion with other candidates during the exams. Bringing unauthorized materials to an exam is considered a serious breach of examination rules, leading to this disciplinary measure.
Entire Results Cancelled
For a smaller group, 41 school candidates and 1 private candidate, WAEC has cancelled their entire results. This harsher penalty indicates more severe forms of malpractice that went beyond isolated incidents, such as widespread cheating or organized collusion.
Entire Results Withheld Pending Further Investigations
The results of 33 school candidates and 3 private candidates have been withheld in their entirety pending further investigations. This typically happens when WAEC suspects irregularities but needs additional time to complete its inquiry before making a final decision.
149 Schools Affected by Withheld Results
In a broader context, WAEC has also withheld certain subject results from candidates at 149 schools across Ghana. These results have been placed on hold due to ongoing investigations into reported irregularities during the exams. The council has stated that the results of these schools will either be released or cancelled, depending on the outcome of the investigations.
Candidates affected by either pending Creative Art and Design scores or withheld results are urged to stay calm and monitor their results over the coming weeks. WAEC has assured students that the updates for the pending scores should be finalized within the next week, and the investigation into the withheld results will be completed as soon as possible.
For students whose results have been cancelled, unfortunately, there is no recourse, as WAEC’s decision is final after evidence of malpractice is confirmed. It serves as a cautionary tale to future candidates to adhere strictly to exam regulations and avoid any actions that could jeopardize their academic futures.
