Life Again, a non-profit organisation dedicated to tackling barriers to girls’ education and addressing teenage pregnancy, celebrated the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child (IDG) with major stakeholders and young girls in the Upper West Region.
Held under the theme, “Girl’s Vision for the Future,” the event took place on Friday, October 11, 2024, gathering over 300 girls from various schools, including special schools.
The CEO of Life Again, Madam Saudatu Mohammed, encouraged the girls to dream big, expressing concern over the rising cases of teenage pregnancy and child marriage in the region. She revealed that 1 in 4 girls in the Upper West Region marries before turning 18 and urged more attention towards tackling these issues.
In addition, the Upper West Regional Director of the Department of Gender, Madam Charity Batuure, called on girls to better plan their lives, asserting that they have 98% control over their future, while society plays a supporting role.
The girls attending the event called for greater efforts to combat gender discrimination and ensure equal opportunities in society.
The International Day of the Girl Child is an annual event declared by the United Nations to increase awareness of gender inequality and promote opportunities for girls worldwide.
